Monday December 19th was a proud occasion for our club when Sean Nugent became the first ever Kilsheelan man to be honoured with the role of County Board Chairman.
From a very young age Sean’s interest in our native games was immense. He honed his skills in hurling and football in the schoolyard in Kilsheelan and quickly became a valued member of juvenile teams. He later graduated to the minor grade. At one stage the Club did not have sufficient players and they joined with Fethard and were known as St Augustines. This combination continued into the U/21 grade and in 1966 the Combo defeated Loughmore in the County Final when Sean played a key role in attack.
He was equally adept in both codes and made his debut for the Junior Hurling side that won the South Title in 1964. He soon became an established member of both disciplines and was on the Senior Football team that defeated Ardfinnan, in that never to be forgotten Final in 1968, a feat repeated in 1972. He also helped the Club to a number of Divisional Titles in the following years. During that time he was a good organiser and gradually began to play a greater role in administration. He spent eight years as Secretary and five years as Chairman of our Club. During that period his skills in this area commanded the attention of the County Board and he served on a number of committees. He was South Board Chairman for three years and almost two years as Secretary. His proven track record ensured that a move to a higher office was inevitable. Sean went on to serve three years as County Vice Chairman and has now been deservedly promoted to Chairman. This role will be a challenging one for Sean and rest assured there will be issues to be dealt with, but with Sean’s expertise and diplomacy we can be confident that Tipperary GAA will be in safe hands during his tenure. Sean, we wish you every success from all in the Kilsheelan Kilcash Club.
