Last Sunday was a momentous day for both Club and County as Tipperary collected the All Ireland Minor Football trophy after a 77 year wait. We have to go all the way back to 1934 when Tipperary won the title. The late Fr Jim Purcell was on the panel. The Final was never played as the other Semi Finalists were disqualified. In 1984 Tipperary were beaten by Dublin and our own Tommy Lonergan was a Selector. The team of 2011’s exploits to date are already well documented. For us it was extra special. David Power is Manager of the team and what a great job he has done. We trailed for most of the way and looked like coming home empty handed but David and his backroom team made some astute changes for the second half which worked the oracle.
Spare a thought for Bill Maher. At midday on Saturday Bill learned of the sad passing of his grandmother and this was a trying time for him. Despite this personal trauma he had an outstanding game. He shot the opening point and made a major contribution throughout. It even got better for us when Adrian Mc Guire was introduced for the final quarter. In one of his trademark drives upfield he helped set up Tipperary’s last point. Conor Davin Murphy was on the extended panel and was very much part and parcel of the group over the last six months. It was a wonderful day for our supporters and for those who met our Club heroes after the match leaving them in no doubt of the magnitude of their achievements.
On Saturday the Junior Hurling team are paired with Clonmel Og in the Semi Final in Monroe at 5.45pm.
The final Golden Goal of the season was scored in the 19th minute. Thanks to everyone who supported this each week and a special thank you to Johnny Fitzpatrick our co-ordinator.
We express our sincere sympathy to the Maher family on the death of Ollie’s mother Anastatia last Saturday.
